Feelings are a resource in your walk to achievement Learn a technique to get mileage from even your negative feelings Today I discuss the all-important subject of feelings. Regrettably feelings have a bad reputation. More the pity, their role in our lives is grossly misunderstood. If we wish to live powerfully and effectively, we need to realise that our feelings are a resource in our lives, and even 'bad' feelings serve a powerful purpose. Society has labelled emotion 'inappropriate' since emotion is associated with negative behaviour such as hysterical weeping or crimes of passion. In this way emotion becomes undesirable. Years ago I decided I would shed no more 'weak' tears and whilst I presented a brave and strong image to the world, this approach was not a winning strategy by any means, and I am still working to unlock the many stuck emotions that this decision created. We need to stop and reflect how powerfully the lives of successful people are characterised by emotion. Richard Branson's autobiography is full of descriptions of passion - from a dangerous love for hot air ballooning through to an out of the blue decision to start a new airline. Mohamed Ali's stance against conscription was fuelled by an anger against injustice. Bishop Tutu's compassion has caused him to wept openly on many occasions. So what makes feelings so important in our path to success? When we entertain a thought we use only a portion of our resources - our head. Whilst there's no denying that the mind is hugely powerful, it nonetheless represents only a small part of our total anatomy. When one entertains a feeling however, the electrical charge initiated in the head spirals out into the body activating and bringing the muscular system into the play as well. In this way feelings mobilise us completely. Lyall Watson gives scientific proof of this in his books. Years ago a young Russian woman was tested for her ability to move objects with her mind. Scientists recorded how she used her mind to separate an egg yolk and egg white suspended in a saline solution a few feet away from her. Watson comments that the tests revealed that she went beyond mind power. Her pulse rate went sky high and she perspired at the level of total physical exertion even though she was sitting still - all signs of emotional overload. It's quite clear that in order to achieve this remarkable feat, this amazing young woman had to fully mobilise her physical resources, and she did this through the power of emotion. And we should too! Male and female, white or black, young or old, emotions must be embraced for the power they hold to help us achieve our goals, and influence our lives for the better. So instead of sidelining or ignoring your feelings, from now on choose fully experience your positive emotions to power you up. If your have a negative feeling, don't push it down, rather use it to help you by asking 'what greater thinking is this negative feeling pointing to?' - and then turn it around for the better. Feelings are power to your life. Acknowledge them, employ them. You'll be better off for it! © Catherine M Glennie |
